Interim and final grades will be posted on the course Collab site. You will need your UVa login and Eservices password to access the Collab site. Click on the link below:

CLICK FOR GRADE POSTING

Once at the Collab site:

  1. Click on the Post'Em button.
  2. Look for the latest "Grades" file (these are listed by date), and click on that.
  3. Grades are NOT posted to the "Gradebook".

Grades will be updated every few weeks, as work is graded.

Here is the meaning of the column headings:

  • 2/11/14: Interim grades posted; puzzlah scores only. If you see a zero here, you haven't registered your iClicker!

  • 2/28/14: Interim grades posted. Includes corrected midterm 1 scores, puzzlah scores through 2/26 (if you see a zero here, you haven't registered your iClicker!), and Constellation Quiz and Telescope Lab scores through 2/24.

  • 4/1/14: Interim grades posted. Includes corrected midterm I scores, puzzlah scores through 3/31; Constellation Quiz scores through 3/26; Telescope Lab scores through 3/24; and other extra credit labs in hand as of 4/1.

  • 4/19/14: Interim grades posted. Includes corrected midterm I & II scores; puzzlah scores through 4/16; Constellation Quiz scores through 4/16; Telescope Lab scores through 3/31; and other extra credit labs in hand as of 4/1. Note that Mars and Jupiter lab scores have not been updated since last posting.

  • 4/27/14: Interim grades posted. Includes corrected midterm I & II scores; puzzlah scores through 4/23; Constellation Quiz scores through 4/23; Telescope Lab scores through 4/21; and other extra credit labs in hand as of 4/1. Note that Mars and Jupiter lab scores have not been updated since the 4/1 posting. If you did a conscientious job on the Mars and/or Jupiter labs, you can assume that you received at least 75% of the credit possible.

  • 5/01/14: Interim grades posted. Includes all work for the semester except the final exam score.

    5/08/14: FINAL GRADES POSTED

    1. All work has now been graded.

    2. The mean score on the Final Exam was 268/326 (82%).

    3. There were 896 points possible on the three examinations, 25 points possible on the Constellation Quiz ("CQ"), and 80 nominal points possible on the in-class Puzzlahs ("PZ"), for a maximum possible nominal score of 1001.

    4. Puzzlah scores were adjusted as follows. If your accumulated Puzzlah score during the semester is P, then the final recorded score (PZ) is computed as follows:

      • If P is 80 or below, then PZ = P
      • If P is above 80, then PZ = 80 + 0.5*(P-80) and rounded up.

      • The average PZ score was 80 points. If you handed in Puzzlah answers on paper, those were recorded under "AddPZ" and included in your TOT score.

    5. If you did any of the optional laboratories, then you received extra credit, listed under "Tel", "Mars", or "Jup".

    6. "TOT" is the combined score on all your work. It equals M1+M2+FX+PZ+AddPZ+CQ+Tel+Mars+Jup. The mean TOT score was 856 points. Maximum and minimum TOT scores were 1007 and 599. respectively.

    7. The final letter grades are CURVED, as explained on the syllabus. The grade breaks for A-, B-, and C- were all adjusted downward from the guaranteed values announced at the beginning of the semester.

    8. You may look over your final exams in my office, but I am required to keep the papers.

    Have a great summer! ---- R. W. O'Connell
